The Arkwright Scholarship

Congratulations to two of our Year 12 students, Edward Parson and Elliot Coldwell who have each won an Arkwright Scholarship. The scholarship is the most prestigious of its type in the UK and supports students through their school studies, encouraging them to go on to study engineering and computing at university. We are delighted that these two students have been chosen to receive their respective scholarships. Mr Coldwell writes...

“The Arkwright Scholarship programme was set up to identify, inspire and nurture future leaders in Engineering, Computing and technical (as opposed to aesthetic) Design. The scholarships support students through their A Levels and encourage them to pursue Engineering, Computing or technical Design at university or through a higher-level apprenticeship and to pursue careers in the field. Every Arkwright Engineering Scholarship is sponsored by an industrial company, university, charitable trust, trade association, professional institution, armed service, worshipful company, industry regulator or personal donor.
Each year over 1,500 Year 11 students from across the country apply for the scholarship, and in any normal year approximately 400 are successful. This year however, due to the difficulties presented by the Covid19 pandemic, only 270 candidates have been lucky enough to be accepted, which makes the achievement all the more impressive.

In addition to writing a lengthy personal statement, which outlined in detail why each wished to pursue a career in engineering, the boys also sat a 2-hour entry exam, which challenged them to solve real-world engineering problems in a creative yet practical way. This was an opportunity for them to demonstrate many of the skills, that will be crucial as they follow their career path in to engineering. Unfortunately, due to Covid restrictions the planned panel interviews had to be cancelled this year and so an extended personal statement was submitted to aid selection.

On behalf of the school I would like to congratulate both Edward and Elliot for their fantastic achievement and wish them both the very best for their futures”
